There is, there are

Presente simple: 'There is, there are'

Tiene el significado de "haber". Se forma con "there" seguido del presente del verbo "to be" en singular o plural, según corresponda.
There is a book Hay un libro
There are some books Hay unos libros

'There is' se utiliza con los sustantivos contables en singular y con sustantivos incontables.
'There are' se utiliza con los sustantivos contables en plural.

Afirmativo

'There is' y 'there are' se forma con el presente del verbo "to be" en su forma afirmativa.
'There's' es la forma corta de there is.
'There are" generalmente no se puede contraer, aunque a veces se hace en el lenguaje informal.

Negativo

La forma negativa de 'there is y 'there are' se forma con el presente negativo del verbo 'to be' (there is not/are not). Es frecuente encontrar la forma contraída (there isn´t/there aren´t).
En las oraciones negativas hay que tener en cuenta que se usará 'any' y no 'some'.

Interrogativo

El interrogativo se forma con el verbo "to be" (is/are) seguido de "there".
Estas preguntas suelen responderse con la forma corta: "Yes, there is/are" o "No, there isn´t/aren´t".

Hay que tener en cuenta que puede usarse en cualquier tiempo verbal, no sólo en presente. Veamos varios ejemplos:
There was a restaurant near here.
Había un restaurante aquí cerca (simple past).
There hasn´t been anybody like you.
No ha habido nadie como tú (present perfect).
There will be some people outside.
Habrá gente fuera (futuro).
There must be a computer.
Tiene que haber un ordenador (con un modal).

Expresiones con 'there is'

There is no sense in crying.
No tiene sentido llorar.
There is no point in waiting.
No tiene sentido esperar.
Is there any point in waiting?
¿Tiene algún sentido esperar?
There is no use crying.
De nada sirve llorar.

No hay necesidad de ir.

Plural de los sustantivos

1. Cuando la palabra termina en “y”, debemos cambiar la “y” por “ie” y después agregar la “s”.
  • Baby = babies.
  • City = cities.

2.
Cuando la palabra termina en "s, ss, sh, ch, o x" tenemos que agregar “es” para formar el plural.                                        
  • Match = matches.
  • Box = Boxes.
  • Class = clases.
  • Buses = Buses.
Singulares y plurales regulares.
3. Si la palabra termina en vocal seguida de “y”, entonces sí podemos agregar la “s”, sin tener que cambiar la “y” por “ie”.
  • Monkey = monkeys.
  • Day = days.
4. Para la mayoría de los sustantivos que terminan en “f”, el plural se forma cambiando la “f” por “v” y agregando “es” al final.
  • Wolf = wolves.
  • Hoof = hooves.

Adjetivos demostrativos (demonstrative adjectives)

This/These

En términos generales, usamos "this / these" para referirnos a personas y cosas, situaciones y experiencias que están cerca del interlocutor o muy próximos en el tiempo.
Objetos cerca del interlocutor.
Por ejemplo:
  • I need to endorse this check. = Necesito endosar este cheque.
  • I need to fill out these forms before I reach the teller. Necesito llenar estos formularios antes de llegar al cajero.

That/Those

Usamos "that / those" para referirse a personas y cosas, situaciones y experiencias que están más distantes del interlocutor, ya sea en tiempo o físicamente.
Por ejemplo:
  • I was talking to that woman over there. = Yo estaba hablando con esa mujer que está allá.

En inglés, la mayoría de las palabras se pluralizan agregando una "s" al singular, pero veremos que también hay otras formas.
